Summary

One of those rare instances where the movie is better than the book。 It's a sweet story but it was sooo very slow One of those rare instances where the movie is better than the book。 It's a sweet story but it was sooo very slow 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 What a wonderful book。 When the book begins it is so easy to hate ove and you find yourself wondering what it is that Sonja ever could have loved, but by the time this book ends you have the warmest place in your heart for the man。 I will always have a soft spot for a guy that hates everything but me and Fredrik Backman manages to take that overdone trope and make it new。 Not only do you get this relationship with his wife, but you get it with every person and animal he interacts with。 You come What a wonderful book。 When the book begins it is so easy to hate ove and you find yourself wondering what it is that Sonja ever could have loved, but by the time this book ends you have the warmest place in your heart for the man。 I will always have a soft spot for a guy that hates everything but me and Fredrik Backman manages to take that overdone trope and make it new。 Not only do you get this relationship with his wife, but you get it with every person and animal he interacts with。 You come to realize that although he may have you believe he is rude, stubborn, and inflexible, he is none of those things when it really matters。 He is a very relatable character unfortunately。 I think this book comments on what it really means to love somebody and it does so in a dark but also very lighthearted way。 It’s a book about loss and grief but it also has optimism and a a lot of celebration of life。 It’s not easy to have all of those things overlap in one story convincingly, but this book did a phenomenal job。 I have never read something quite it。 Above all, this book made me think about the role you play in strangers lives。 How much of a difference a kindness can make and how easily you can find a friend in the most unlikely places and circumstances。 On top of the unique story and characters, there are so many unbelievable quotes from this book。 I am very much looking forward to reading more from the author。 This is long, but I would be remiss if I didn’t add my favorite lines from the book。 Thank you for this absolute gem: "Death is a strange thing。 People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it's often one of the greatest motivations for living。 Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury。 Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis。 Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival。 We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take someone other than ourselves。"- Fredrik Backman 。。。more

This is such a sweet, sweet book and a light read。 I read it before watching the movie and all I can say, is that Ove is a bloody teddy bear。

Płakałam ostatnie 10 minut audiobooka… śmiałam sie i wzruszałam, a Backmann pisze w tak fantastyczny sposob i opowiada o życiu tak, że trafia do mnie。 Chce więcej!!!

🥺♥️Re-read before going to the Tom Hanks film version of the book (though I really think the actress who played Marisol, Parvaneh in the book, stole the show)

I absolutely love Ove! This book will have you laughing, crying, and feeling so many other heartfelt emotions as we learn so much about Ove and Sonja。 Highly recommend this! Looking forward to reading more by Fredrick Backman。

If you ran into Ove on the street, you might rightly assume he's a bit of a grump。 Orphaned as a teen after being raised mostly by his pragmatic father, Ove lived his life the way he knew best -- by knowing he was always right, and that his way was the best。 Until Sonja walked onto his train like a ray of sunshine personified, and his life was never the same。Ove had never been asked how it lived before he met her。 But if anyone had asked him, he would have answered that he didn't。But now Sonja i If you ran into Ove on the street, you might rightly assume he's a bit of a grump。 Orphaned as a teen after being raised mostly by his pragmatic father, Ove lived his life the way he knew best -- by knowing he was always right, and that his way was the best。 Until Sonja walked onto his train like a ray of sunshine personified, and his life was never the same。Ove had never been asked how it lived before he met her。 But if anyone had asked him, he would have answered that he didn't。But now Sonja is gone, and Ove has been forcibly retired from his job, and there is nothing left for him to live for。 Literally。 He has it all planned out, prepared to make it as little trouble for everyone else as possible, if only his dang neighbors would stop knocking on his door and asking him to do things。This is an incredibly lovely story of a man who wants to be alone and the people who won't let him。 Whether it's his new neighbors who can't stop breaking things (including themselves), or his old neighbors who he has been feuding with for years, there's always a reason for him to put death off for another day。 Especially when he takes a moment to see things through Sonja's eyes。"I just wanted to know what it felt like to be someone you look at。"This was a beautiful, touching, and yes, melancholy, story where even the grumpiest man can surprise you。 And Backman continues to surprise me with his talent for finding the heart of a story and laying it bare。 。。。more

I don’t think a book has ever moved me so much。 What an utterly brilliant story。 Had to take myself off for a bit after I’d finished it as I was just crying at it。 I don’t think I’ve ever felt so sad about a book but also happy at the same time。 Just beautiful writing 🥺❤️

This book definitely marked me, the beginning is a bit slow but then it quickly hooks me, I love all the characters, Ove reminded me a lot of my grandfather。。。 maybe that's why this book still reached my heart so much, it's definitely in my top 3!

I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in 48 hours after several months of finding that picking up any book was a struggle。 Unfortunately it’s a difficult book to review without giving away spoilers。The book centres on a grumpy sixty-ish-year-old Swedish man。 Whilst I can’t say I particularly related to him, that may be more an issue of lack of self-awareness than any objective dissimilarity because I related enormously to his relationship with his wife, who (like mine) is as relentlessly ch I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in 48 hours after several months of finding that picking up any book was a struggle。 Unfortunately it’s a difficult book to review without giving away spoilers。The book centres on a grumpy sixty-ish-year-old Swedish man。 Whilst I can’t say I particularly related to him, that may be more an issue of lack of self-awareness than any objective dissimilarity because I related enormously to his relationship with his wife, who (like mine) is as relentlessly cheerful as he is / I am irritable。 A few of his wife’s traits were remarkably reminiscent of my wife: filling the entrance hall with so many of her coats that I can barely get the front door open, a desire to fill every flat surface in the house with junk and a tendency to agree with my requests but then do the exact opposite。 (But he’s not like me at all。 Oh no。。。)The main character, Ove, or as he invariably described in the book “a man called Ove” (or in flashbacks “a man who was Ove”) reminded me in particular of my parents and father-in-law: distrustful of certain aspects of modernity with which they survived for seven or eight decades, such as mobile phones and the use of bank cards, and incredibly cautious in all their dealings。 The book illustrates beautifully that the pace of change in the world from digitisation and the internet in the last 20 years is so great that many people have simply been left behind and find themselves unable to do things which they could have done blindfold their entire lives: “This was a world where one became outdated before one’s time was up”。Whilst the relentlessly grumpy old man is a wryly amusing concept – Chapter 4 is entitled “A Man Called Ove Does Not Pay a Three-Crown Surcharge” – it would not, of course, work on its own to keep a reader absorbed, let alone, as I was, gripped, for an entire book。 The book has a journey, and the journey is twofold。 First, it tells Ove’s backstory, but in order not to give too much away I will have to limit myself to saying that it is a perfect illustration of the adage that you should walk a mile in someone’s shoes before judging them。 Second, it tells the story of what happens to Ove when a young family move in next door and a cat starts hanging around near his house。 Again, without giving too much away, one feels right from the outset that the outcome of the story is more likely to be uplifting than depressing。The book has now been turned into an American film starring Tom Hanks as ‘Otto’ (‘Ove’ presumably being too alien for them), and with the mother of the family that moves in next door being Hispanic rather than, as in the book, Iranian (presumably on the basis that a character from the Axis of Evil won’t get bums on cinema seats in Muskogee)。 I think I’d probably quite like the Swedish film of the book (which was nominated for two Oscars), but I won’t be going anywhere neat the American version because the chances of Hollywood improving on this delightful book, or even getting close to replicating its essential quirkiness, are close to nil。 。。。more

frederick backman can just write the saddest mf stories and still find a way to make you laugh through it。conceptually, it’s lovely! we’re introduced little grumpy old man who yells at people in his lawn, but rather than leaving him to go investigate some other, more interesting characters, we stay。THEN, backman’s writing brings the story to another level。 i personally love his frankness, the simplicity of his structure。 he says things that i feel i’ve heard a thousand times, but he says them in frederick backman can just write the saddest mf stories and still find a way to make you laugh through it。conceptually, it’s lovely! we’re introduced little grumpy old man who yells at people in his lawn, but rather than leaving him to go investigate some other, more interesting characters, we stay。THEN, backman’s writing brings the story to another level。 i personally love his frankness, the simplicity of his structure。 he says things that i feel i’ve heard a thousand times, but he says them in a way that feels new, rather than trite and overdone。really really beautiful[TW for potential readers: lots of discussion of suicide, depression, illness, loss and death]on a separate note; whatever you do, do not watch a man called otto w tom hanks。 it’s good, but it simply does not do justice。 the beauty of the book is we get to peel back the curtain of ove’s life, step into his shoes and understand his anguish, understand why he is the way he is, understand what made him。 the nature of a film is completely oppositional to that, without being able to hear his thoughts, ove remains, to a certain degree, two-dimensional。 and the literal point is that he’s an archetypal character that’s traditionally flat, who is given full dimension。(some things just do not need film adaptations, that’s all i’ll say) 。。。more

I've been told that this is a favorite by many people, but that it was slow and dry, and I couldn't imagine liking it。 This book was really good。 It's a great reminder that we don't always know what is going on with people。 Just because someone may be "grumpy" doesn't mean they don't have a heart of gold。 I've been told that this is a favorite by many people, but that it was slow and dry, and I couldn't imagine liking it。 This book was really good。 It's a great reminder that we don't always know what is going on with people。 Just because someone may be "grumpy" doesn't mean they don't have a heart of gold。 。。。more
